In the first segment, our panelists discuss Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s call for an investigation into nongovernmental organizations allegedly assisting “illegal border crossings” near El Paso. This move has raised concerns about religious liberty, as faith-based groups and organizers aiding migrants with medical care and shelter face potential intimidation. While Abbott didn’t provide evidence, Catholic activist Dylan Corbett emphasizes that many faith-based organizations play a vital humanitarian role at the border, addressing the consequences of an imperfect immigration system. The Southwest border is witnessing a surge in encounters with migrants, with agents encountering up to 2,500 migrants daily.

In the second segment of the show, we explore the court case Pavez v. Chile at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. The case revolves around specialty license plates in Texas, which often display various viewpoints, including potentially offensive ones. Becket argues that these plates don’t represent official government speech and that individual viewpoints shouldn’t be restricted even if they’re offensive. The discussion delves into whether the 2015 U.S. Supreme Court decision against the Sons of Confederate Veterans would hold similarly in 2023.
