Show notes:
In the first segment, our panelists discuss the political leanings of various religious denominations in the U.S. According to Pew Research Center’s 2014 Religious Landscape Study, Mormons emerge as the most Republican-leaning group, with 70% aligning with or leaning towards the GOP. Conversely, historically black Protestant denominations like the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and the National Baptist Convention are among the most staunchly Democratic, with 92% and 87% identifying with or leaning towards the Democratic Party, respectively. These insights shed light on the diverse political affiliations within religious communities.
In the second segment of the show, we explore the court case Yeshiva v. Yu Pride Alliance. The Supreme Court’s recent 5-4 vote lets stand, for now, a ruling requiring Yeshiva University, a Modern Orthodox Jewish institution in Manhattan, to recognize an L.G.B.T. student group. The majority suggests the university should pursue challenges in state court, while the dissenting opinion, led by Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., argues that this infringes upon the university’s right to religious freedom, emphasizing the need for further review.
In the final segment, Tell Me Something I Don’t Know, each panelist quickly shares interesting pieces of information related to religious freedom.
