Show notes:

In the first segment, our panelists discuss religious employers and reproductive health. People are regularly refused reproductive health care because they are patients of religious hospitals that decline to provide sterilization, infertility treatments, and abortion or because they work for religious employers that will not cover abortion or contraceptives in their insurance plans. Against this backdrop, recent attempts to expand religious liberty to further curtail reproductive rights seem even more imbalanced.

In the second segment of the show, we explore why young adults are leaving the church. Many parents and church leaders wonder how to most effectively cultivate durable faith in the lives of young people. Younger Americans have been shaped by a culture that esteems open-mindedness, tolerance and acceptance. Today’s youth and young adults also are the most eclectic generation in American history in terms of race, ethnicity, sexuality, religion, technological tools and sources of authority. Most young adults want to find areas of common ground with each other, sometimes even if that means glossing over real differences. A five-year project headed by Barna Group president David Kinnaman explores the opportunities and challenges of faith development among teens and young adults within a rapidly shifting culture. The findings of the research are included in a new book by Kinnaman titled You Lost Me: Why Young Christians are Leaving Church and Rethinking Faith.

In the third segment, our focus turns to the court case, Dignity Health v. Minton. This case was filed on behalf of a transgender man denied a hysterectomy at a Catholic hospital. The California state intermediate appellate court rejected free exercise of religion, freedom of expression, and freedom of association defenses raised by the hospital.
